Your protein shaker smells because a shake leaves behind far more than water. Milk proteins, fats and sugars coat the inside — every surface, not just the ones you can see. On top of that, some plastic shakers can hold onto odours that are difficult to shift, even after normal washing.

If you've washed one properly and still caught a whiff the next morning, that isn't you doing it wrong. Two separate things are going on, and only one of them comes off with a sponge.


It isn't just the bits you can see

Residue doesn't politely stay where you can reach it. It coats the whole inside of the cup, then works its way into every join and groove on the way out.

And some of it isn't on the surface at all

This is the part most people never hear.

Most shakers — ours included — are made from a plastic called polypropylene. It looks solid. At the scale smells happen on, it isn't. Research on plastic food packaging has found that polypropylene can absorb the very compounds that make things smell, straight out of the liquid sitting in it. Warmth speeds that up.

So some of what you're smelling isn't sitting on the plastic. It's in it. There's nothing there to scrub.

That research was done on food packaging rather than shakers. It tells us how the material behaves, not what will happen in your kitchen.


Why it comes back after you've washed it

This is the one that drives people mad. You wash it. It smells fine. You put it away. Next morning, it's back.

It isn't back. It never left.

What plastic absorbs, it can also give back — slowly, as things around it dry out. Rinsing clears the cup, and then what's held in the plastic starts working its way out again.

Same smell. Just arriving late.


Why a normal wash doesn't always finish the job

Wash your shaker. Always. It genuinely works — every study we looked at found washing knocked odour down substantially.

It just doesn't always finish. In tests on polypropylene, washing — including hot water and detergent — cut the smell a long way, and still left the plastic more odorous than it started. Which matches what you already know from experience: some plastic shakers can hold onto odours that are difficult to shift, even after normal washing.

That's not an argument against washing. It's an argument against assuming a wash is the end of it.


How a shaker gets to that point

You finish the shake at the gym. There's no sink, or there's a queue, or you're already running late for work. It goes back in the bag.

The bag goes in the car. The car sits in the sun all afternoon. Then the bag goes under your desk, or stays in the boot, and you remember the shaker on Wednesday when you need it again — or worse, when someone else notices it before you do.

Absorption speeds up as things warm up. A gym bag in a hot car is close to the worst place a used shaker can be.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my shaker still smell after I've washed it?

Two things are usually happening at once. Residue collects in places that are hard to reach — the seal channel, the threads, under the lid — and the plastic itself can take up some of the odour. A wash handles the first far better than the second.

Why is the smell so strong the moment I open it?

Because it's been shut. A sealed shaker concentrates everything inside it, and warmth increases how much the plastic takes up and later releases. Opening the lid is the first time any of that moves.

Can I just put it in the dishwasher?

If your shaker is dishwasher-safe, it's a perfectly good routine clean — check the manufacturer's care instructions. Take the lid apart before you load it, or the water never gets into the seal channel or the threads. And as above, washing reduces odour without always finishing the job.

Do vinegar or bicarb soda work?

They're common home approaches, along with hot water and soaking. How far they get depends on how long the residue has been sitting there and what your shaker is made from.

How often should I clean it?

Rinse after every session — that's the habit that matters most, and if you already do it, you're ahead of most people. If you want the detail

Research on polypropylene food packaging has measured how much odour compound the plastic takes up, and how much survives a wash.

Hot washing brought odour intensity down from 7.4 to 4.0 on a ten-point scale, against 2.1 for unused plastic (Strangl, 2021). Water and caustic washing removed roughly 30–40% of odour compounds from polyethylene and polypropylene bottles (Roosen, 2022). A 2026 study found washing changed the character of the smell more than its strength (Belé).

None of these tested protein shakers, or a kitchen sink. They tell us how the material behaves.
